Helping Yourself

Coping with loss, ill-health and change are part of everyday life. Most of us get through or learn to cope with help from family and friends, often finding that the best support and information comes from those of them who have already gone through a similar experience. We ask for and largely appreciate professional care at times, but it is only part of the help we need.

Self-help groups are another way of getting and giving help. They provide a further form of support when help from family, friends and professionals is not enough, is inappropriate or not available.

The benefits of a self-help group for its members are:

- self-empowerment
- confidence
- friendship
- humour
- learning
- ideas and options
- inspiration
- telling your story
- chance to hear other people with similar difficulties

Speakability supports a national network of Self-Help Groups.

These groups are run by people with Aphasia for people with Aphasia. They meet regularly for mutual support and social activities and provide a platform for self-help.
