Speakability Self-Help Groups encourage people with Aphasia to develop the confidence to use their communication skills, however limited, through social interaction. Self-Help Groups also provide the following benefits for people with Aphasia:
- opportunity to socialise with others who understand the problems of living with Aphasia
- enabling them to develop new interests
- raising awareness of Aphasia in their local community
What are the responsibilities of a volunteer facilitator?
Responsibilities could range from arranging transport or meeting venues, to helping to plan and organise outings, as well as helping the Group Chair, Treasurer or Secretary to develop their role.
Volunteers are vital to the work that we do. Sometimes Speakability has been able to start a new group because a volunteer has come forward in an area where no support exists.
What skills and experience does a volunteer facilitator need?
Volunteer facilitators must be good listeners with clear speech. They need to be open and friendly, with the ability to relate to people in a non-judgemental manner. Good organisational and administrative skills may also be useful. Volunteers also need an understanding of the voluntary sector, disability and Aphasia. Speakability can provide training and on-going support.
What is the time commitment?
Speakability Groups meet regularly, either once or twice a month, during a weekday. Meetings usually last between two and three hours. Volunteer facilitators may also need to liaise with Group members between meetings.
We hope that volunteers will able to commit at least 12 months to the role, as many of our Groups only meet on a monthly basis.
Speakability aims to cover all reasonable out-of-pocket expenses.
